Building the BEaTriX facility for the ATHENA mirror modules X-ray testing

Abstract: BEaTriX (Beam Expander Testing X-ray) is the X-ray facility under construction at the INAF-Osservatorio Astronomico Brera (Merate, Italy) to prove that it is possible to perform the X-ray acceptance tests (PSF and Aeff) of the ATHENA mirror modules at the required rate and with the required accuracy. The unique optical setup makes use of a micro-focus X-ray source with anode in Titanium, a paraboloidal mirror with small radius of curvature, and a set of crystals to monochromate and expand the beam to fully ill… Show more

“…Performing an extensive set of simulations with the BEaTriX simulation code and modeling variable levels of optical finishing, [19] this time up to a 45 arcsec HEW for the mirror (which was not far, indeed, from the initial quality of the pre-formed mirror), [15] we obtain the trends in Figure 13. The vertical collimation, essentially depending on the source size, is the least sensitive to the mirror quality.…”

“…Before and after mechanical and thermal testing of the flight modules X-ray performance measurements are required, collocated with the environmental test equipment. A novel beamline was developed for this purpose: BEaTriX [37][38][39].…”
