Bulk Densities of California Soils in Relation to Other Soil Properties

Abstract: Analyses of 721 samples from inorganic horizons of upland and alluvial soils in seven orders were utilized to develop equations for predicting soil bulk density at 1/3‐bar water content. The minimum standard errors of estimate (0.14 g cm−3, r2 = 0.723, for upland soils and 0.11 g cm−3, r2 = 0.672, for alluvial soils) were obtained with functions of organic carbon content, 15‐bar water content, the ratio of 15‐bar water to clay, silt and sand contents, parent material, calcium carbonate equivalent, mean soil ho… Show more

“…Relações similares entre Ds e matéria orgânica e Ds e textura do solo foram demonstradas nos trabalhos desenvolvidos por Alexander (1980), Adams (1983), Rawls (1983), e Bernoux et al (1998). Em solos tropicais, teores elevados de óxidos de ferro e alumínio estão associados à formação de uma estrutura granular…”

“…The sampling and measurement of BD is labor intensive, costly, and often impractical, especially at depths below 1 m. Therefore, we used BD values derived from a pedotransfer function (PTF) developed from 1254 measured data sets from the CLP region (Wang et al, 2014b). For soils on the CLP, this PTF outperformed other established PTFs, such as those presented by Alexander (1980), Manrique and Jones (1991), and Balland et al (2008). The PTF model used was …”

Generally, OC content, measured in g per kg, and with inorganic particle-size expressed as a % of the fine earth (fraction <2 mm), has been the most important variables in PTFs, and followed by clay percent.…”
