Buprenorphine for Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Hepatitis C Virus–coinfected Patients

Abstract: Objectives Buprenorphine is associated with enhanced human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) treatment outcomes including increased antiretroviral therapy initiation rates, adherence, and CD4+ cell counts among HIV-infected opioid-dependent individuals. Buprenorphine facilitates hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment in opioid-dependent patients with HCV monoinfection. Less is known about buprenorphine’s role in HIV/HCV coinfection. Methods We conducted a retrospective chart review to evaluate HCV care for HIV-infecte… Show more

“…In this study of patients receiving buprenorphine treatment for opioid use disorders, 53% were infected with HCV, and 34% were confirmed to have chronic HCV infection. Our findings are similar to others’ findings in which HCV infection among patients receiving opioid agonist treatment has ranged from 30–90%(Hallinan, Byrne, Amin, & Dore, 2005; Murphy, Dweik, McPherson, & Roll, 2015; Taylor et al, 2012). Currently, heroin use is on the rise in the US, with unprecedented increases in almost every demographic group over the last decade(Jones et al, 2015).…”

“…Integrations occurred at all system levels, but most (n =30) described micro level service integration [33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40][41]44,[47][48][49][51][52][53][57][58][59][61][62][63][66][67][68][69][70][71]76,77,79,80,82] ( Table 2). Within HIV facilities, 15 studies explored micro level integration [33][34][35][36][37]48,49,52,[61][62][63]67,[69][70][71], one described meso level clinical integration [60] and five described macro level integration…”
