Buprenorphine versus methadone maintenance treatment in an ambulant setting: a health‐related quality of life assessment

Abstract: These results suggest that buprenorphine treatment is as effective as methadone regarding effects on quality of life and withdrawal symptoms. Buprenorphine has the potential to reduce the harm caused by drug abuse. Further research is needed to determine if buprenorphine is more effective than methadone in particular subgroups of patients.

“…However, there are very few studies documented in the literature that have investigated this assumption. For nonclinical populations we could not find research done and studies that have an element of quality of life measurement are restricted to opiate users receiving treatment from various agencies [1,2,3,4,5,6,7].…”

“…Various professions create their own interpretations, with little resemblance and much fragmentation in-between disciplines (Farquhar 1995;Rapley 2003). Nonetheless, there is a growing recognition of QoL as an important indicator for the impact of treatment, the need for health care, the evaluation of interventions and for cost-benefit analyses (Allison et al 1997;Carr and Higginson 2001;Foster et al 2000;Giacomuzzi et al 2003;Oliver et al 1997;Torrens et al 1997).…”

“…La buprénorphine à haut dosage est apparue sur le marché vers le milieu des années 1990 et constitue une autre approche pharmacologique dont l'efficacité est comparable à celle de la méthadone (Kakko & al., 2007 ;Giacomuzzi & al., 2003 ;Mattick & al., 2003 ;Schottenfeld & al., 2005). La réten-tion est cependant légèrement supérieure avec la méthadone.…”
