Burden of Illness in People with Alzheimer’s Disease: A Systematic Review of Epidemiology, Comorbidities and Mortality

Abstract: Background Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disease worldwide, and an updated quantification of its impact on morbidity, disability, and mortality is warranted. We conducted a systematic literature review, focusing on the past decade, to characterize AD and assess its impact on affected individuals. Methods Searches of Embase, MEDLINE, and the Cochrane Library were conducted on August 7, 2020 and updated on November 10, 2021. Observational s… Show more

“…This increase in AD prevalence, which impacts physical health, cognition, psychosocial welfare, and the ability for independent living, calls for improved care strategies. 1 Furthermore, in the United States, more than 16 million family members and friends provided 18 billion hours of unpaid care to people with AD and other dementias (ADRD) in 2020, underscoring the urgent need for supportive interventions. 2,3 The primary goal for society in caring for older adults with AD is to maintain their independence and enable them to live at home for as long as possible, thereby improving their overall health span.…”

“…The annual probability of death for participants in the ‘Well’ health state was based on age- and sex-adjusted all-cause mortality data from U.S. life tables. 73 Published hazard ratios 77,81,104,105 describing the excess mortality associated with each of the health conditions of interest were used to adjust background all-cause mortality and the annual probability of death for those diseases. Falls were assumed to be an acute event that could occur in any cycle with a conditional probability of death for any fall event ( Supplementary Table 4 ).…”

“…When including patients in the earlier stages of the disease, this estimate rises to a total of 416 million people worldwide, with figures ranging between 327 and 525 million. According to the latest systematic literature review, numerous cases of AD might not be captured in studies including only individuals with a formal diagnosis of AD dementia [6]. The incidence of AD has been increasing in recent years, and it is estimated that this trend will continue [3].…”
