Background Burn and trauma injuries need emergency care and resuscitation, which required uninterrupted delivery of inpatient care services during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Burn patients are physiologically immunocompromised, increasing the risk of COVID-19 infection in them. This study analyzes the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on patient trends in a burn and plastic unit and assesses the effect of COVID-19 infection in burns. Methods This single-center, retrospective observational case–control study was conducted in the Department of Burns, Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery of a tertiary care hospital in New Delhi, India. Patient data was collected from April 1, 2019 to August 10, 2019 and from April 1, 2020 to August 10, 2020. All data of burns and trauma patients collected was analyzed and compared. Results There were total 350 admissions during COVID time period and 562 admissions during non-COVID time period. The admission rate, type of burn injury, and death rate did not vary significantly during the two time periods. Thermal burn was the most common type of burn injury. There were total 18 cases diagnosed to be COVID-19 positive during the pandemic. There were two deaths among COVID-19 positive burn cases. Conclusion This study finds no difference in patient patterns during COVID and non-COVID time period. Amongst burn patients, no increased risk of COVID-19 infection is seen with larger body surface area of burns. No increase in mortality is seen in burn patients infected with COVID-19.

At the end of January 2020, SARS-CoV-2 started escalating worldwide. COVID-19 can exert its effects on immunity, inflammation, and multi-organ system disease, common denominators with the burn injury. The pandemic required major efforts to Burn centres in order to preserve burn patients’ care and contribute to the health care response. In our Burn Unit we autonomously developed a protocol for patients acceptance and surveillance of the hospitalized ones and the personnel. We briefly describe our experience with six cases of burn patients infected by SARS-CoV-2 highlighting the overlap between medical treatment of burn patients and COVID-19 patients. To avoid viral spreading epidemiologic control is essential, especially preventive measures such as isolation of infected patients and identification of the source of infection. In our surgical practice, we increased the use of enzymatic debridement avoiding procedures with a high risk of viral particles spreading. Personnel protection and dedicated pathways have been planned, optimizing air circulation and disinfection. Vaccines represent the best hope for the global population to stop the viral spread, despite new variants outbreaks.

Introduction: The COVID 19 pandemic has adversely impacted all aspects of health care throughout the world. Burn care in lower and middle income countries has suffered the most. We aimed to compare burn care at Kirtipur Hospital before and during the pandemic and explore psychological issues and practice behaviour among burn care worker (BCW). Methods: Retrospective data analysis of burn patients admitted during April to August of 2019 and 2020 was done. Internet based survey of BCW was done. Results: Burn admissions, demographics and characteristics did not change. Fewer surgeries were undertaken in 2020. Almost half of the BCW worked 12 hours shift or longer. Most were working on half pay. Nearly everyone was using hand sanitizers, hand washing and masks. Few had access to level II personal protective equipments (PPE) to see suspected patients; fewer had access to face shield, KN 95 masks and boot. Even gloves and caps were scarce. Many feared getting themselves or family members infected. Majority realized the need of clear hospital policy on how they would be managed when infected. Conclusion: Number, types, severity and mortality did not change. Number of surgeries decreased. Issues like pay cuts, longer working hours and lack of PPEs were reported by majority.
