Burning Characteristics of Microcellular Combustible Ordnance Materials

Abstract: A microcellular combustible ordnance material composed of 70 % RDX (cyclotrimethylene trinitramine) and 30 % PMMA (poly methyl methacrylate) was fabricated using the solvent method and foamed by supercritical CO2 as foaming agent. This material has a number of advantages and many find potential application in weaponry. In this paper, vented bomb tests were conducted on the porous materials to gain a qualitative understanding of how the material is burning in a gun environment. The extinguish process showed tha… Show more

“…These materials have immensep otential for application in propellants, combustible cartridge cases, [251,252] and caseless ammunition. [254][255][256][257] The samples were processed in designed foaming molds with expansion ratios of 1.1, 1.2, and 1.35 (the molds with ac ertain expansion ratio determine the foaming space of the saturated preform). “…[253] Am icrocellular combustible ordnance materialc omposed of RDX and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was fabricated using the solventm ethoda nd foamed by using scCO 2 . [254][255][256][257] The samples were processed in designed foaming molds with expansion ratios of 1.1, 1.2, and 1.35 (the molds with ac ertain expansion ratio determine the foaming space of the saturated preform). The foaming temperature, saturationp ressure, sorption/desorption time, and RDX content (50-70 %) were the key factors that exerted as ignificant impact on thed ensity,p orosity,a nd homogeneity of the RDX/PMMA porous samples accordingtothe SEM data ( Figure 14).…”

“…Zimmerman developed a 7.62 mm small machine gun based on CCC ammunition, which accelerated its application in weapon ammunition elds [4]. Moreover, the United States army has used CCCs in 155 mm weapons with automatic loading systems [5]. Until now, CCCs have been extensively used in high-caliber tank gun ammunition [6].…”

“…These effects significantly increase the burning rate of porous materials. The results of investigations of the combustion of porous materials show that the burning process is different from that of traditional propellants, and the burning rate of porous propellants is much higher [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20]. As previous methods for determining the burning rate have not taken into account the internal porous structure of the combustible case material, they failed and have led to significant errors in the ballistic calculations.…”
