Business Data Sharing through Data Marketplaces: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract: Data marketplaces are expected to play a crucial role in tomorrow’s data economy, but such marketplaces are seldom commercially viable. Currently, there is no clear understanding of the knowledge gaps in data marketplace research, especially not of neglected research topics that may advance such marketplaces toward commercialization. This study provides an overview of the state-of-the-art of data marketplace research. We employ a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach to examine 133 academic articles and … Show more

“…Our research could also benefit intermediary platforms that facilitate data sharing. As pointed out by Abbas et al (2021), MPC could affect the value proposition of those platforms by (1) enabling sharing and computation of data insights without disclosing the input data; and (2) affording control over data without a trusted third party.…”

“…We select a study setting with a high level of risks and need for control, and a low level of trust. We choose a data marketplace setting: a platform to facilitate data sharing and trading between businesses with no prior relationship (Abbas et al, 2021). Since participants in a data marketplace have no prior relationship, they face a lack of inter-organizational trust and control over data (M. Spiekermann, 2019).…”

“…By reducing environmental pollution, road corridor improvements as well as extending the design life of urban roadway, the management of the e-logistics shared model can minimize environment impacts, waste, and increase its scalability and use by all stakeholders. With the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT), the sharing of digital assets autonomously through marketplaces developed from the Economy of Things (EoT), has enabled ubiquitous commercialization of digital assets, immediate liquefaction of the physical assets indexed to be search and traded as online commodities [17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25]. The shared economy has ratified and authenticated the concept of crowdsourcing and partaking of digital assets through digitalized platforms.…”

“…Next, we classified different types of data marketplaces in our taxonomy based on their orientation and ownership structure. In doing so, we answer the call from Abbas et al (2021) to conduct empirical research in business models to convey data marketplaces toward commercialization.…”

“…Business models are essential for data marketplace commercialization, but such topics are still limited in literature (Abbas et al, 2021) and generally fragmented (Fruhwirth et al, 2020). Most studies tend to focus on an individual component of business models, such as pricing mechanisms (e.g., Mao et al, 2019;Niu et al, 2020;Zheng et al, 2020), preferences to use data marketplaces (e.g., Schomakers et al, 2020), data properties as economic goods (Demchenko et al, 2018), a decision model to purchase data assets (Lawrenz & Rausch, 2021), or a specific technology implication for business models (e.g., Agahari et al, 2021;Travizano et al, 2020).…”
