Butadiene Polymers

Abstract: This article provides an overview of polybutadiene materials as a progression from the monomer 1,3‐butadiene to a useful polymer product with a wide range of applications. A brief history of polybutadiene, with its development as a high cis ‐polybutadiene material during World War I through its present day use as a high vinyl substitute for styrene–butadiene rubber is included. The structure and properties of the monomer are presented, along with monomer manufacture, typical specificati… Show more

“…The accessibility of practical and efficient technologies for the direct conversion of n -butane to 1,3-butadiene (BDE) remains a grand challenge in catalysis science . BDE, which is a primary building block of synthetic rubber and a wide range of polymer products, is mainly produced by cryogenic distillation of C 4 fractions from naphtha cracking, or catalytic dimerization of ethanol . The recent emergence of lighter feedstocks (e.g., shale gas) has created a technology shift focused on upgrading lighter hydrocarbons, which negatively impacts yields of C 4 fractions, ultimately raising barriers to the sustainable cracking-based BDE production.…”

“…The C4 primary petrochemicals include butenes (a mixture of positional isomers) and 1,3-butadiene (BDE), primarily used for preparing various thermoplastics. , BDE is used in styrene–butadiene rubbers for the manufacturing of automobile tires. Other important polymers using BDE as a monomer include polybutadiene, acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene, and nitrile rubbers.…”
