Butanol production by Clostridium acetobutylicum in a continuous packed bed reactor

Abstract: In this study, we report on a butanol production process by immobilized Clostridium acetobutylicum in a continuous packed bed reactor (PBR) using Tygon rings as a carrier. The medium was a solution of lactose (15-30 g/L) and yeast extract (3 g/L) to emulate the cheese whey, an abundant lactose-rich wastewater. The reactor was operated under controlled conditions with respect to the pH and to the dilution rate. The pH and the dilution rate ranged between 4 and 5, the dilution rate between 0.54 and 2.4 h(-1) (2.… Show more

“…Shamsudin et al 65 investigated the ABE production by Clostridium saccharoperbutylacetonicum N1-4 using different immobilization materials and concluded that the passive immobilization on polyurethane foam increased the production by 215.12%. Napoli et al 67 screened various carriers including silica gel, Tygon, Teflon, PVC and glass beads for better biofilm formation by observing SEM after 1 week.…”

“…ABE fermentation in any regime can be combined with cells immobilization performed by different methods -entrapment in alginate (Largier et al, 1985), use of membrane bioreactor (Pierrot et al, 1986) or cells adsorption on porous material (S.Y. Napoli et al, 2010). Recently, final report of the US DOE grant (Ramey & Yang, 2004) has revealed a novel approach toward ABE fermentation.…”

“…Estes produtos são butanol (principal), etanol e acetona (fermentação ABE) presente em diferentes títulos dependendo da cepa utilizada (Napoli et al, 2010). Atualmente esta determinação é feita utilizando a cromatografia gasosa (Liu et al, 2010;Lépiz-Aguilar et al, 2011) na maior parte dos estudos.…”
