Butterflies (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) of the Restinga de Cabedelo National Forest, Paraíba State, Brazil

Abstract: Restinga forests are plant formations that occur on plains of quaternary sandy deposits along the Brazilian coast. Despite historical reduction of the Restinga forests, little effort has been made to know the butterfly fauna of these areas. This paper is an important contribution to the butterfly’s knowledge, being the second inventory in the Restinga forest of northeastern Brazil. The survey was conducted in the Restinga de Cabedelo National Forest (FLONA de Cabedelo, following the Portuguese abbreviation) an… Show more

“…The collected specimens were deposited in CLEIIC. We confirmed the first records for Paraíba based on lists previously published for the state (D 'Almeida 1935;Kesselring & Ebert [1982]; Kerpel et al 2014;Ferreira-Junior 2021;Medeiros et al 2021).…”

“…In Brazil, more than 3,570 species have been recorded (Casagrande 2023a;2023b;Casagrande et al 2023a;2023b;Carneiro & Casagrande 2023;Duarte et al 2023;Mielke et al 2023). Although butterflies constitute one of the best-known insect groups worldwide, there have been only seven inventories conducted in the Northern Atlantic Forest, of which only three were carried out in UCs (D 'Almeida 1935;Cardoso 1949;Kesselring & Ebert [1982]; Melo et al 2019;Bezerra et al 2021;Medeiros et al 2021).…”

“…Teir higher dominance might be attributed to the availability of host plant species for Pieridae butterfies in all surveyed habitat types in Usangu area [60]. Furthermore, it is worth noting that the greater dominance and highest number of Pieridae emphasize the fact that the majority of species in this family are indications of disturbed environments [61,62]. Although Usangu area has been annexed into the national park with strong protection measures, the area still contains habitat patches that were exposed to intense anthropogenic pressure and ornamental plants which contribute to the greater dominance of these species.…”

“…Lycaenidae was found in the grassland, Miombo woodland, and riverine forest habitats and no other species of this family were recorded in the Vachellia/ Commiphora woodland habitat. Lycaenidae are commonly known to associate negatively with disturbance and they usually decrease in richness in disturbed environments [61,63]. Based on the impacts of anthropogenic activities previously reported in the Usangu area [20], it is fair to suggest that the average number of species belonging to Lycaenidae has been infuenced by past disturbances and changes in their habitat conditions in the area.…”

“…In the Paraíba state, in addition to the study conducted by Souza et al (2018) reporting the occurrence of A. campestris in cochineal cactus (N. cochenillifera), this species has also been reported in the Restinga de Cabedelo National Forest (MEDEIROS et al, 2021) and in a remnant of semiurban Caatinga in the Sertaneja Depression of Patos (FERREIRA-JÚNIOR, 2021).…”
