BY520-9, A Peach Rootstock for the Southeastern United States that Increases Scion Longevity

Abstract: BY520-9 is being provisionally released as bulk seed for industry testing as a rootstock for peach and nectarine [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch] where root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne spp.), peach tree short life (PTSL) associated with ring nematode (Criconemella xenoplax (Raski) Luc & Raski], or both are a problem. BY520-9 consists of open-pollinated seed of 69 selections from B594520-9, which traces back to S-37 and Nemaguard.

“…Thirty-Wve percent emergence was typical of 'Guardian' peach rootstock when it was Wrst introduced commercially as a bulked seedlot. But given the importance of Peach Tree Short Life tolerance provided to peach trees propagated on 'Guardian' (Okie et al 1994), speciWc selections were identiWed that increased the emergence of 'Guardian' in the rootstock bed to 60-70%. While seedling emergence exhibited by two of the three advanced generation PEAL hybrids did not diVer signiWcantly from that of the rootstock standard 'Nemaguard,' alternative seed treatments for these hybrids may increase emergence.…”

“…In 1994, the peach rootstock Guardian R Brand BY520-9 (Figure 1), which is tolerant to M. xenoplax, was released (Okie et al, 1994) as a bulked seed source for use as a commercial rootstock for peach and nectarine. It consists of open-pollinated (OP) seed from selected seedlings from genotype BY594520-9 that can be traced several OP generations back to the parental genotypes, S-37 and Nemaguard (Okie et al, 1994).…”

“…Guardian® 'BY520-9' has been released as a bulked seedlot for industry use as a rootstock for peach and nectarine. It consists of openpollinated seeds of approximately five selections that trace several open-pollinated generations back to the PTSLsusceptible peach rootstocks S-37 and Nemaguard (Okie et al 1994). A Guardian® open-pollinated selection 3-17-7 is being used as a core genotype in the Guardian® 'BY520-9' bulked seedlot and exhibits superior survival on PTSLinfected sites compared with other Guardian® selections (Reighard, unpublished).…”
