C/C-SiC Composites for Advanced Friction Systems

Abstract: Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMC), based on reinforcements of carbon fibres and matrices of silicon carbide, show superior tribological properties in comparison to grey cast iron or carbon/carbon. In combination with their low density, high thermal shock resistance and good abrasive resistance, these Si‐infiltrated carbon/carbon materials, called C/SiC or C/C‐SiC composites, are promising candidates for advanced friction systems. Generally, the carbon fibres lead to an improved damage tolerance in comparison to … Show more

“…1 By now, almost all commercial C f /C-SiC brake discs are paired with pads that are made of so-called low metallic friction material (also called organic pads), a type of composite that all abrasives, lubricants, fillers and reinforcements are bonded by resin. Metallic ingredients are included to improve the wear resistance, thermal diffusivity and mechanical robustness 2 .…”

“…Pyrolytic carbon (PyC) interface with a thickness of 200nm was deposited on fiber using C 3 H 6 precursor at 870 o C for 1 h at a reduced pressure of 5 kPa. Then, SiC matrix was infiltrated by low pressure chemical vapor infiltration (LPCVI) process for fabrication of C/SiC composites with density of about 1.7 g/cm 3 and 1.9 g/cm 3 respectively [10][11][12]. Next, two layer of Si-B-C matrix and two layer of SiC matrix were infiltrated alternatively in sequence for specimen with density of 1.7 g/cm 3 , then, three layers of SiC coating were deposited on specimen, which was marked as C/(SiC-SiBC) m .…”

“…Carbon fiber reinforced SiC matrixes composites (C/SiC) have been extensively studied due to attractive properties, such as low density and high specific strength . Recently, C/SiC composites are promising materials for many applications, especially for aircraft engineer thermo-structural components [10][11][12][13]. However, oxidation of carbon fiber and interface pyrolytic carbon occurs much easily and limits long-term application for C/SiC composites in severe high temperature oxidizing environment [14][15].The C/SiC modified with boron bearing species, such as borosilicate glass, boron, boron carbide and Si-B-C ceramic, shows excellent self-healing property, especially with Si-B-C ceramic.…”

“…Among various structural damage detection techniques, such as infrared testing [7], eddy current testing [8,9], magnetic particle testing [10], and ultrasound testing [11,12], the ultrasound testing technique has been widely used due to its relatively high spatial resolution, portable operation, high performance ratio, and high effectiveness in damage detection. By recording the ultrasonic waves propagating through a structure, macroscopic damage such as cracks, inclusions, and notches can be detected by using this method [5].…”
