C-erbB2/HER2 in Human Gliomas, Medulloblastomas, and Meningiomas

Abstract: C-erbB2/HER2 serves as an important prognostic and predictive biomarker in various human tumors, especially in breast cancer, whereas its role in human intracranial tumors is more uncertain. We therefore performed a search in PubMed to get an update. This literature review comprises immunohistochemical studies on the clinical significance of c-erbB2/HER2 overexpression in gliomas, medulloblastomas, and meningiomas. In general, the findings were discrepant with regard to correlations between overexpression, tum… Show more

“…HER2 expression in meningiomas ranged considerably from 2% to 100% without clear relation between expression and tumor grade. [13] In the present study, HER2 expression was higher in Grade I meningiomas than in Grade II/III meningiomas in contrast to the typically increased expression in higher grade tumor.…”

“…[14] In future strategies, HER2 has a significant role in diagnostic and targeted therapy in intracranial tumors. [13] In our study, HER2/neu positivity was noted in 73% of meningiomas. Slightly higher HER2/neu immunopositivity was seen in males compared to females.…”

“…Expression of HER2 has previously been investigated in human meningiomas with ambiguous results [ 9 ]. Low [ 10 , 11 ], moderate [ 12 , 13 ], and large [ 14 – 19 ] proportions of immunoreactive tumors have been reported.…”

“…Since the association between HER-2 gene amplification and disease prognosis was demonstrated (10,11), overexpression of the gene has been observed in a variety of primary human carcinoma, including breast cancer (12,13), gastric cancer (14,15), gastroesophageal adenocarcinomas (16) and mucinous epithelial ovarian cancer (17). Initially, HER-2 was found to be upregulated in meningioma (18)(19)(20)(21). Subsequently, several studies have provided evidence that Her-2 is important in meningiomas (19,20).…”
