Abstract:Small intestinal villi are structural and functional units uniquely adapted to the nutrient absorption in higher vertebrates. Villus enterocytes are organized in spatially resolved “zones” dedicated to specialized tasks such anti-bacterial protection, and absorption of amino-acids, carbohydrates and lipids.
