Cache Optimization on Hot-Point Proxy Caching Using Weighted-Rank Cache Replacemnt Policy

Abstract: The development of proxy caching is essential in the area of video‐on‐demand (VoD) to meet users' expectations. VoD requires high bandwidth and creates high traffic due to the nature of media. Many researchers have developed proxy caching models to reduce bandwidth consumption and traffic. Proxy caching keeps part of a media object to meet the viewing expectations of users without delay and provides interactive playback. If the caching is done continuously, the entire cache space will be exhausted at one stage… Show more

“…Weighted-Rank Cache Replacement Policy (WRCP) [54] uses parameters as access frequency, aging, and mean access gap ratio and such functions as size and cost of retrieval. These heuristic approaches do use optimization frameworks to solve the problem, but they are only focusing on one single job, and ignoring cross-job intermediate dataset reuse.…”

“…A content delivery network (CDN) is a prevalently used overlay network built over existing physical networks, enabling video content to be distributed to the network edge, closer to end users. It can provide reliable and scalable video services, while reducing network congestion and service response time [2], [3]. With these advantages, more and more video content providers are adopting CDNs for their video service delivery [4].…”

“…Study [106] develops cost metrics to compare storage vs. compute costs and further suggests when to use a transcoding on-the-fly solution can be more cost-effective. Weighted-Rank Cache replacement Policy (WRCP) [107] uses parameters such as access frequency, aging, and mean access gap ratio to calculate the cost of retrieval. Although, these heuristic approaches strive to use optimization frameworks to solve the problem, they only focus on a single job, and ignore cross-job intermediate dataset reuse.…”
