Cachexia research in Japan: facts and numbers on prevalence, incidence and clinical impact

Abstract: Even though most clinical data on cachexia have been reported from Western countries, cachexia may be a growing problem in Asia as well, as the population in this area of the world is considerably larger. Considering the current definitions of obesity and sarcopenia in Japan, which are different from the ones in Western countries, the lack of a distinct cachexia definition in Japan is strinking. “…Cardiovascular disease is a highly prevalent group of disorders including chronic heart failure (CHF) in the elderly population with numbers affected reaching approximately 2% of the population . CHF prevalence increases strongly with age and its rates double approximately every 10 years in male and every 7 years in female patients after 55 years of age; hence, the majority of CHF patients are elderly to very old and the numbers of affected people are expected to rise with the increased overall life expectancy, particularly in Asia . Overall, CHF leads to a significant morbidity, institutionalization and mortality, as well as to an enormous socio‐economic burden and studies focusing on the care and needs of the patients are desirable .…”

“…1 The term sarcopenia, on the other hand, was coined in 1989 by Rosenberg and colleagues. [3][4][5] The diagnosis can be made by using weighing scale and by asking the patient for his or her weight before HF developed or 12 months before the actual date. Cachexia is frequent not only in patients with HF but also in patients with CKD, COPD, and neurological diseases as well as in rheumatoid arthritis.…”
