Cadmium and Selenium Interaction in Mammals

Show more

“…The relation was more pronounced in muscle and kidney than in liver tissues (Table 4). Selenium and Cd interaction reported in laboratory mammal experiments and human studies (reviews) [5,10] were confirmed in studies on polar bears, bowhead and beluga whales, red deer, [12,32] but were not found in ringed seals, arctic foxes and wolverines, [12,54] regardless of the high Cd burden similar to the one in our study. Our finding that most bears had molar Se/Cd ratios in liver and kidney under or equal to unity ( Table 1) may imply that Se levels, although in excess compared to Hg, were yet insufficient to detoxify more abundant tissue Cd by means of binding to the complex.…”

“…[5,10] One such mechanism is the in vivo formation of a non-toxic complex with Se and the redistribution of Cd and Hg. It is the most frequently proposed mechanism in both studies on experimental animals and environmental monitoring studies.…”

“…[1]. Its exposure is inevitable and may produce toxic effects in many organs and organ systems through binding to biological structures, accumulation in internal organs or induction of free radical production [2]. Therefore, how to clear the Cd accumulation in the body is an urgent and important mission.…”
