“…There are several reasons for the selection of brine shrimp Artemia as a test organism including the continuous availability of Artemia in the form of dry cysts (Vanhaecke and Persoone, 1984), the low cost, the extensive relevant literature , and the fact that they are su$ciently small to be accommodated in small beakers (Trie!, 1980). Although there are many studies dealing with the e!ect of toxic substances on Artemia (Bagshaw et al, 1986;Persoone and Castritsi-Catharios, 1989;Pandey and MacRae, 1991;Migliore et al, 1997), there is not much information on the bioaccumulation of toxic substances in the body of the organism. The close relationship between toxic e!ects and bioaccumulation has been indicated in a number of bioassays using other test organisms such as Chlorella ellipsoidea (Aoyama et al, 1987), Daphnia magna (Kungolos and Aoyama, 1993), and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Kungolos et al, 1999a).…”
