Cadmium‐induced changes in glutathione and phenolics of Thlaspi and Noccaea species differing in Cd accumulation

Abstract: Glutathione (GSH) and phenolics play an important role in plant defense against metal-ion toxicity. The antioxidant activity and metal-binding capacity of these compounds can account for the protective effects. In contrast to animal-cell models, however, the possible interplay among these substances in stress defense of plants is poorly investigated. This study compares the influence of cadmium (Cd) on the profiles of both soluble phenolics and GSH in shoots of different Thlaspi and Noccaea species: two ecotyp… Show more

“…Thus, summer MT leaves were characterized by high PAL and sPRX activities and by higher concentration of compounds with antioxidant function and metal-chelation properties, such as HCAs and flavonoids (Agati et al, 2012;Andejelkovic et al, 2006;Rice-Evans et al, 1997). Accumulation of phenolic compounds in leaf tissues was also observed in different plant species exposed to heavy metal (Llugany et al, 2013;Singh et al, 2015, and refs. herein), and also in plants grown in multi-polluted soils (Márquez-García et al, 2009;Martínez-Alcalá et al, 2013).…”

“…caerulescens shoots, potato tubers, leek bulbs, and L . perenne shoots did not find 7,4′-dihydroxyflavone [ 55 60 ]. These culture-independent studies on the abundance of Acidobacteria subdivision 4 point out that its growth can be influenced by plants, implying plant—microbe interactions.…”

“…6,7 Phenolic compounds are a large group of secondary metabolites in plants that are related to defense responses. 8 Moreover, these metabolites are well-known to show numerous bioactive properties, such as antioxidant and antiinflammatory. 9 Carotenoids and chlorophylls are the main pigments found in plants.…”
