Cadmium Removal Performances of Different Dye Ligands Attached Cryogel Disks

Abstract: Abstract. Poly(HEMA) cryogel disks were synthesized by free radical polymerization of 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA), and then Cibacron Blue F3GA (CB), Reactive Green 19 (RG) and Congo Red (CR) were immobilized as dye ligands. Disks were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and swelling degree, porosity calculations. Cd 2+ adsorption experiments were performed for 60 min. Maximum adsorption capacities were determined as 25.5 mg/g; 48.0 mg/g and … Show more

“…Poly(HEMA) cryogels were prepared according to Keleş and co-authors (2015) [58] with slight modifications. Briefly, 21.43 mmol HEMA was mixed with N,N´-methylene-bis(acrylamide) solution (3.67 mmol in 20 mL of deionised water).…”

“…As for cryogels, they usually have large pores, are made of inexpensive materials and can be produced in any desirable shape (blocks, cylinders, discs, etc.) [58,59], and may, therefore, be adapted to the surface chosen for sampling.…”

“…Also, environmental engineering applications were proposed for cryogel-based poly-HEMA: nicotinamidemodified HEMA aerogels have been studied to remove pesticides from wastewater [9]. In the same context, a series of HEMA-based aerogels have been tested for the retention in their porous structure of some heavy metal ions (cadmium and uranium) from the dispersion media [10,11]. Polymer composites based on poly-HEMA-GMA (glycidyl methacrylate) and silver nanoparticles have been studied and tested for water treatment for the removal of organic pollutants and microorganisms [12].…”

“…The surface treatment by the introduction of dye ligands on the adsorbent surfaces to enhance their surface affinity toward target adsorbates has been widely studied for protein separation [21] and less studied for other adsorbates such as heavy metals [22][23][24][25]. A number of textile dyes, known as reactive dyes have been used in dye-ligand affinity systems for protein separation [26][27][28][29], and heavy metal adsorption [24,25,30]. These dyes can be easily introduced into the adsorbent surfaces especially those having hydroxyl groups on their surfaces such as cellulose, agarose, dextran, and silica materials [21].…”
