Caffeine and Theophylline Inhibit β-Galactosidase Activity and Reduce Expression in Escherichia coli

Abstract: The β-galactosidase enzyme is a common reporter enzyme that has been used extensively in microbiological and synthetic biology research. Here, we demonstrate that caffeine and theophylline, common natural methylxanthine products found in many foods and pharmaceuticals, negatively impact both the expression and activity of β-galactosidase in Escherichia coli . The β-galactosidase activity in E. coli grown with increasing concentrations of caffeine and theophylline w… Show more

“…Furthermore, caffeine has multiple biological effects in the lungs, such as the mediation of autophagy 101 and regulation of the intestinal flora. 102 Lung autophagy dysfunction 103 and changes in lung microecology 104 have been identified in cases of BPD. These biological effects may be a further direction to explore the pathological mechanism of caffeine in preventing BPD.…”

“…Concurrently, machine learning technologies, especially the application of Extreme Gradient Boosting Decision Trees (XGBoost), have been employed to enhance the accuracy of malaria diagnostic tools [16,17]. This precision measurement technology not only increases diagnostic accuracy but also reduces costs, making malaria detection more widespread and economically feasible [18,19]. The integration of these technologies marks a significant improvement in malaria treatment methods, demonstrating how modern science plays a crucial role in addressing global health challenges.…”

“…Consequently, there is a growing trend to shift inference processes from the cloud to edge devices for real-time tasks like video object detection and segmentation. Current edge device capabilities, however, limit their use for real-time DL model inference and the application in other domains such as biology and finance [18][19][20][21] . Moreover, transferring data over networks consumes more energy than local processing due to the high cost of network transmission.…”
