Cage cultivation of bester in East Kazakhstan

Abstract: Abstract:The results of cage breeding of sturgeon hybrids in the third fish farming zone's climatic conditions are given. It is also shown the achieved fish breeding and biological features, the dynamics of the growth rate, the viability of the object and the possibility of breeding stocking material of hybrid sturgeon in providing certain technological conditions.

“…Hybrid bester (B)—a cross between beluga ( Huso huso Linnaeus, 1758) and sterlet ( Acipenser ruthenus Linnaeus, 1758)—is characterized by an excellent growth rate under aquaculture conditions, which may even surpass the rapid growth of the maternal species [ 14 ]. Bester produces high-quality caviar at a younger age compared to beluga [ 15 ]—a trait which places bester in the shortlist of the most popular hybrid sturgeons. Backcross hybridization of bester with the parental species has been previously practiced in Russia [ 16 ], but there is limited scientific information on the subject.…”

“…The government's decision to partially reimburse aquaculture producers for capital investments and the cost of feed has been credited for recent favorable trends (Figure 4) [23,104]. KazNIIRKh has also funded applied research to investigate the suitability of water bodies in southern and southeastern parts of the Republic for rearing carp and for cage culture of sturgeon in the east [163][164][165][166]. Progress has nevertheless been modest in comparison to neighboring Uzbekistan, where the industry has recovered more rapidly [161,167,168] and in Russia [169].…”
