“…The adverse effect of a specific duration of abiotic stress on anther development during meiosis is irreversible and no morphological abnormalities can be observed in pollen until the BP stage in most male sterile lines (Dorion et al, 1996; Ji et al, 2010; Koonjul et al, 2005; Li et al, 2019). We found that metabolite profiles of sterile anthers diverged from those of fertile anthers starting from the M stage and persisting through the TP stage.…”

“…BNS (Bainong sterility) is a thermo-sensitive genic male sterile wheat line characterised by anther fertility transformation in response to LT stress during meiosis. Abnormalities in sterile pollen, such as the failure of vacuole decomposition and the absence of starch accumulation, are observed at the BP stage, resembling features seen in pollen affected by abiotic stress (Ji et al, 2010;Li et al, 2019). Disruption in carbohydrate metabolism during anther development may affect starch accumulation, which is crucial for pollen germination, and lead to pollen abortion.…”

“…Hence, the cloning of environment‐sensitive genic male sterile genes and the study of their functions are conducive to the application of the two‐line hybrid method in crops. At present, a number of environment‐sensitive genic male sterile genes have been cloned, and the underlying mechanisms responsible for different types of environment‐sensitive genic male sterility have been characterized (L. Chen et al, 2009; H. Chen et al, 2020; Fan & Zhang, 2017; Gu, 2009; H. Li et al, 2009; Lu et al, 2006; W. Tang & Li, 1994; Z. Zhou, 2006) (Table 2).…”
