The adsorption of polyacrylic acid (PAA) on hydroxyapatite (HAP) from HAP saturated solutions was studied in this work as a function of PAA concentration, temperature, pH and ionic strength. In all experiments, the adsorption was studied under conditions of negatively charged adsorbent and adsorbate, respectively. These conditions ensured that adsorption was not electrostatically favored. The solution composition was found to influence significantly the maximum of the adsorbed amount. In fact, the adsorption of PAA, was found to increase with ionic strength, due to the decrease of double layer thickness of HAP particles. The effect of temperature and ionic strength on the kinetics of adsorption are also reported. Adsorption isotherms obtained at 30 o C were found to be Langmuirtype, while at higher temperatures they were of the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) type. The absorbed amount of PAA was found to decrease with temperature, while it increased with ionic strength. For pH values lower than 6.5, the adsorption increased while for pH between 6.5 and 9 the adsorbed amount remained almost constant.

BACKGROUND This work deals with the effect of several additives on the morphology of calcium sulfate dihydrate (DH) crystals, produced by reactive crystallization involving strong CaCl2–HCl solutions. Experiments were conducted at 40 °C under various conditions, namely homogeneous and seeded (heterogeneous) crystallization in CaCl2/HCl solutions ranging from very dilute (0.42 mol L−1/0.04 mol L−1) to very concentrated (1.8 mol L−1/6.3 mol L−1). RESULTS In the absence of additives a distinct difference in crystal morphology was observed depending on solution composition. Homogeneously formed DH crystals from dilute solution were in the form of needles. DH crystals formed in concentrated acid solution were thick elongated plates. The most influential additives in concentrated solutions were CTAB (cetyltrimethylammoniumbromide), PAA (polyacrylic acid) and PVS (polyvinyl sulfonic acid). CTAB favoured formation of industrially interesting thick slab crystals. In contrast PAA favoured the formation of elongated and thinner crystals as a result of preferential crystal plane adsorption. PVS had a detrimental effect on DH crystal nucleation and growth explained by its polymeric structure. CONCLUSION Apart from PVS, CTAB and PAA no influence was seen for the majority of additives tested. This was attributed to lack of ionization caused by the highly acidic solutions. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry

Calcium sulfate: Properties and clinical applications

Calcium sulfate (CS) has enjoyed a longer history of clinical use than most currently available biomaterials. It is well-tolerated when used to fill bone defects and undergoes rapid and complete resorption without eliciting a significant inflammatory response. The raw material from which it is made is relatively inexpensive and abundant. In addition, CS can be used as a vehicle to deliver antibiotics, pharmacologic agents, and growth factors. It has found wide use in orthopedics and dentistry, and has been used in a variety of clinical applications, including the periodontal defect repair, the treatment of osteomyelitis, sinus augmentation, and as an adjunct to dental implant placement. Despite these advantages, the material has not enjoyed the popularity of many other regenerative materials, although there has been a recent resurgence of interest in the material. This review examines the properties and clinical applications of CS, with an emphasis on dental applications of the material. Limitations of the material are discussed as well as suggestions for future research.
