Calcium sulfite hemihydrate: Crystal growth rate and crystal habit

Abstract: The crystal growth rate of CaS03 * V2H20 was measured by a pH-stat method in aqueous solution with pH 3.5 to 6.5, 1 to 25 mM dissolved sulfite, 0.01 to 0.3 M Ca", and 0 to 25 mM sulfate. The growth rate was a strong function of relative supersaturation and was strongly inhibited by dissolved sulfate. The growth rate per unit BET surface area, R' (moldcm2-min), is given by: 9.7 X low4 exp (-1025WRT) x (RScaso,-1)2 X RSCaSo4-l, where RSCaSO3 and RSCaSO4 are the relative saturations with respect to calcium sulfit… Show more

“…The crystallization of calcium sulfite is inhibited by increased gypsum saturation (dissolved calcium sulfate). Tseng 27 ' 28 found that the growth rate of one crystal face is inhibited by sulfate and that the thickness of individual platelets increases as solid sulfate content decreases: 10 percent oxidation gave 0.01 urn platelets, 3 percent oxidation gave 0.1 ^m platelets, and 1 percent oxidation gave 2 jum platelets. Chang et al 24 found that dewatering properties of dual alkali solids were improved by operating at conditions giving lower levels of solids oxidation.…”

“…Besides, the growth rates of sparingly soluble salts are also related to the solution properties, such as ionic strength, pH, and activity ratio [4][5][6][7]. Although studies on growth kinetics of sparingly soluble salts were found elsewhere [8][9][10], most of the experiments were conducted in a stirred tank using seeds below 50 mm with a few cases for the seed size of several-hundred micrometers, which is the suitable size used in a fluidized pellet reactor. For design purpose, a correlation between crystal growth rate of large seeds and process variables of pellet reactor is required.…”
