Calibration of Electrical Resistance to Moisture Content for Beech Laminated Veneer Lumber “BauBuche S” and “BauBuche Q”

Abstract: Electrical resistance measurements are often employed for the purpose of nondestructive long-term monitoring of wood moisture content (MC) in timber structures. As a structural material for high-performance load-bearing applications in such structures, beech laminated veneer lumber (LVL) enjoys a growing popularity. However, due to the processing of beech LVL affecting physical properties, calibration curves for bulk beech wood cannot be used. In this study, resistance was measured on 160 beech LVL samples equ… Show more

“…During the measurement, the measurement frequency of the VNA was set to 2.45-6 GHz, and 901 data points were collected each time for the amplitude and phase of the SPs to construct a data set. A total of 16 MC samples were collected; each MC corresponds to three thicknesses (4 cm, 7 cm, and 10 cm, respectively) and three bulk densities (0.198 g/cm 3 , 0.218 g/cm 3 , and 0.238 g/cm 3 , respectively), 144 experiments, and 129,744 data sets. The moisture content data are shown in Table 1.…”

“…To improve dimensional stability of LVL, a few veneer sheets are sometimes placed transverse to the main direction. The LVL product “BauBuche Q” has crosswise-oriented veneers to the main direction [ 41 ]. At around 150 °C, a two-component phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin is commonly applied in a hot-pressing process.…”

“…Las mediciones de resistencia eléctrica para la determinación del contenido de humedad de la madera son utilizadas en el monitoreo no destructivo de estructuras de madera (Grönquist, et al, 2021). Igualmente, las propiedades eléctricas de la madera son útiles para la caracterización y el desarrollo de materiales compuestos (Li, et al, 2020).…”
