Calibration of the Benthic Foraminiferal Oxygen Index in the Marmara Sea

Abstract: Ben thic foraminifera (to tal as sem blages) were stud ied from 30 sea-floor sam ples col lected along a bathymetric transect on the south ern shelf of the Marmara Sea from depths of 15-350 m. At each sta tion, Kaiho's Ben thic Foraminiferal Ox y gen In dex (BFOI) was cal cu lated based on spe cies abun dances us ing the meth ods out lined by Kaiho (1994). The cal cu lated BFOI val ues were con verted to an a logue ox ygen val ues, and cal i brated to the dis solved ox y gen val ues mea sured 1 m above the sea… Show more

The palaeoenvironmental in ter pre ta tion based on foraminifers applies the re quire ments of pres ent-day rep re sen ta tives of recorded taxa (Thomas, 1980;van der Zwaan, 1982;Culver, 1988;Lutze and Thiel, 1989;Verhallen, 1991;Murray, 1991Murray, , 2006Sjoer dsma and van der Zwaan, 1992;Kaiho, 1994;Hohenegger, 2005;Kouwenhoven and van der Zwaan, 2006;Kaminski, 2012). Palaeobathymetry was es ti mated on the basis of ben thic fauna char ac ter is tics and the P/B ra tio (100 ṕ lank tonic fora minifera/to tal foraminifera).…”
