Calling Song Displacement in a Zone of Overlap and Hybridization

Abstract: The ground crickets Allonemobius fasciatus and A. socius meet in a mosaic zone of overlap and hybridization stretching from the East Coast to at least Illinois. To test whether male calling song differences were enhanced in sympatry, we analyzed the songs of crickets from inside and outside the zone of overlap along two transects. No evidence of calling song displacement was found in A. socius males from populations within the zone of overlap. On the other hand, A. fasciatus displayed calling song displacement… Show more

“…Reproductive character displacement (RCD), a signature of possible reinforcement, can be inferred when divergence of song phenotype between populations is greater in sympatric than allopatric regions (Brown & Wilson, 1956;Butlin, 1987;Schluter, 2000). Although RCD has been found in many other acoustical insects (Hewitt, 1990;Ritchie, Butlin & Hewitt, 1990;Benedix & Howard, 1991;Marshall & Cooley, 2000;Massie & Markow, 2005;Jang & Gerhardt, 2006;Popple, Walter & Raghu, 2008), it has not been confirmed in the carnea-group, despite an ongoing search. A continentally sympatric pair of highly vagile species rarely presents clear regions where allopatry can be proven (Fig.…”

“…Several studies across a range of taxa support the expectation that sympatric populations will show phenotypic divergence compared to allopatric populations (Boag & Grant, 1984; Benedix & Howard, 1991; Schluter & McPhail, 1992; Adams & Rohlf, 2000). Recent studies of adaptive divergence have focused on dissecting single traits into their component parts (e.g.…”

“…After extensive study (Howard and Furth 1986;Benedix and Howard 1991;Gregory and Howard 1993;Doherty and Howard 1996;Veech et al 1996), the only factor we have been able to identify that isolates the two species is conspecific sperm precedence Gregory and Howard 1994). Although females of both species paired exclusively with heterospecific males produce fertile hybrid offspring , when females of both species are mated to a conspecific male and a heterospecific male, heterospecific sperm rarely fertilize eggs Gregory and Howard 1994).…”
