Calotropis poisoning with severe cardiac toxicity A case report

Abstract: Calotropis is a widely prevalent plant in the Indian Subcontinent. The extract and various parts of the plant are used by traditional healers for treating miscellaneous diseases. All parts of the plants are toxic; there are many case reports of gastrointestinal, cutaneous and ocular toxicity with Calotropis. The plant contains Cardenolide glycosides which have Digoxin like effects and can cause severe cardiotoxicity. We report a patient who developed cardiovascular collapse after oral ingestion and cutaneous a… Show more

“…Calotropis, a small shrub (sometimes referred to as weed), belongs to the family Apocynaceae. Calotropis is a widely distributed plant in tropical and subtropical zones, comprising two species, procera and gigantea [ 30 ]. In our routine screening of novel lectins from tropical endogenous plants, we have detected a robust hemagglutinating activity (HA) in the Calotropis procera crude leaves extract.…”

“…The therapeutic limitations and clinical pitfalls of calotropin as an anticancer agent are represented by insufficient data on adverse and toxic effects in humans. Very few cases have reported some digestive, hepatotoxic adverse effects and only one case with severe cardiotoxicity ( Iyadurai et al, 2020 ). Other important limitations are the lack of clinical studies of calotropin in cancer, and the lack of in vivo studies of calotropin in experimental animal models for all cancers.…”

“…Calotropis procera Linn. is a common shrub mostly found as a weed around India (Iyadurai et al 2020), attributed to warm and dry areas, the sub-Himalayan regions and the southern regions of the country. Different parts of Calotropis procera have been reported to possess different therapeutic activities such as proteolytic (Atal andSethi 1962) antimicrobial, larvicidal (Al-Rowaily et al 2020), nematocidal, anticancer, anti-in ammatory (Basu and Chaudhuri 1991;Kumar and Basu 1994).…”
