Camera navigation and cannulation: validity evidence for new educational tasks to complement the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery Program

Abstract: This study provides preliminary validity evidence for the metrics of these new tasks. The value of adding these tasks to the FLS manual skills assessment is marginal in terms of predicting level of training.

“…With regard to the metrics used for our tasks, excellent inter-rater reliability highlighted very high consistency of the scores from different raters using simple, objective metrics similar to the FLS scoring system [1,11]. This allows for assessment of performance by direct observation and does not require recorded performances or any sophisticated assessment systems such as motion analysis [12].…”

“…The transfer of quality control and quality assessment from simulation-based training into the operation room, however, is not established yet. In addition, it is shown that laparoscopic operative skills are not a precise predictor for the quality of camera navigation; hence, an independent assessment of camera navigation skills is essential for objective quality control [7,14]. With this study, we present the first intraoperative, structured assessment of camera navigation quality in advanced laparoscopic colorectal surgery.…”

“…The importance of high-quality camera assistance has come more into focus over the last years. Several studies were conducted to assess and improve laparoscopic camera navigation, though all these studies were conducted with virtual reality simulators or box trainers [4,[6][7][8][9]. With the structured assessment of laparoscopic camera navigation skills (SALAS) score, we developed the first objective intraoperative assessment tool for laparoscopic camera assistance [10].…”

“…This is an aspect of future research and should be considered by surgical teachers, trainees, and the industry for realistic simulator software development. Current curricula for laparoscopic education such as the Fundamentals of laparoscopic surgery (FLS) and its derivatives do not contain complication management (18).…”
