Can a Patient use an App at Home to Measure Knee Range of Motion? Utilizing a Mobile App, Curovate, to Improve Access and Adherence to Knee Range of Motion Measurements

Abstract: Introduction Knee range of motion is a critical measure of progress after knee injury and knee surgery. However, many patients do not understand the importance of knee range of motion and most do not have a way to self-monitor their knee range of motion at home. The patient being able to measure their own range of motion can provide improved access to this critical health metric, and could improve adherence with their daily knee range of motion exercises. The purpose of this technical report is to… Show more

“…To measure and monitor knee joint movement, range of motion (ROM) is a clinical metric often used by medical experts [14], [15]. Accurate ROM measurements are critical for diagnosis, symptom progression monitoring, clinical decision-making, therapeutic feedback analysis, surgery planning, and impairment determination [16], [17]. Furthermore, it assists the patient in monitoring their progress while receiving medical care and can be used as a rehabilitation objective.…”

“…Indeed, through their easy image storage and automatic transfer of angle data, they allow (i) multiple observers to measure an identical motion, (ii) observers to measure the same motion at different times, and (iii) observers to assess individuals located in a different place. This ability has made their use a more attractive option for remote monitoring and telerehabilitation [ 20 ]. Moreover, the widespread adoption of smartphones might favor their large-scale use and their feasibility for long-term applications.…”
