Can Assistant Principals’ Years of Experience Make a Difference in School Suspensions? A State-wide Analysis of North Carolina Assistant Principals

Abstract: School discipline disparities within the U.S. P-12 public schooling system have been a staple issue for over four decades. The enforcement of out-of-school suspensions, in particular by inexperienced teachers, have traditionally impacted Black and Latinx students more than White students. Yet teachers are not the final decision-makers regarding student discipline which rests primarily on the shoulders of assistant principals and principals. While researchers have clearly linked teacher experience to discipline… Show more

“…Due to the lack of studies on DP leadership challenges, responsibilities, and roles from various educational systems, considerable effort is needed when comparing DP roles and responsibilities in diverse educational systems despite DPs being considered the most senior within the middle leader position who would occupy the vacant position of a principal (Morgan, 2018;Barnett et al, 2017;Williams, 2019). Nevertheless, to make comparisons, it is proposed that authors should collaborate with researchers from other educational systems in order to compare DPs' tasks, responsibilities, and roles in many schooling systems.…”

“…Our analysis has several limitations. First, we were unable to include assistant principals in our analysis, despite the fact that inclusion of this set of leaders could be useful given research that suggests assistant principals are influential in student suspension decisions (Williams et al, 2020). Our analytic file was also limited temporally—where in future analyses it would be important to include more recent years of data, especially as the racial/ethnic demographics of K-12 schools in states like Texas have become increasingly diverse in the 21 st century.…”

“…Despite the great value of the vice-principal's work, it is mentioned in the research literature less often than teachers and principals (Arar, 2014; Dor-Haim, 2021). Much of the literature dealing with vice-principals concerns the definitions of the position (Pollock et al ., 2017), its responsibilities (DeMatthews et al ., 2023; Williams et al ., 2022) and the transition from a schoolteacher to a position of vice-principal (Nelson, 2020). Few studies have examined the relationships of vice-principals within the school, while referring to the emotional aspects involved in their role (Dor-Haim, 2023; Mitchell et al ., 2017; Tahir et al ., 2019).…”
