Can energy self-sufficiency be achieved? Case study of Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship (Poland)

Abstract: An analysis was carried out to show whether the Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship (Poland) could become energy self-sufficient. The technical potential of electricity and heat from renewable sources has been calculated. The calculated values are 6.93 TWh/year of electricity and 15.84 PJ/year of heat—these amounts would ensure the energy independence of the Voivodeship. The Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship is an example of transformation towards “green” energy, it shows that such transformation is also possible in… Show more

“…The study emphasises the key role of energy communities in using waste to improve energy selfsufficiency and promote sustainability [39]. The results reveal that these communities effectively manage waste and exploit it as a significant energy resource, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on non-renewable energy sources [40].…”

“…At the same time, it is worth emphasizing that the considerations conducted by these authors concern mainly rural areas and the possibility of farmers' participation in innovative energy initiatives. Iglinski et al [33] also drew attention to the importance of RES development in rural areas. According to the authors, the development of RES is conducive to the sustainable development of these areas and ensures energy security and even energy self-sufficiency of individual regions.…”

“…This whey can subsequently be used in different applications, for example, in biogas production or as fertilizer [25,26]. The interest in biogas production and its upgrading to biomethane, which can substitute natural gas and vehicle fuel, has become a trend in Europe, but its potential is still underexploited [27][28][29]. This interest has been further heightened by the Russia-Ukraine war.…”
