Can low‐grade chondrosarcoma in flat bones be treated with intralesional curettage and cryotherapy?

Abstract: Background and objectives Chondrosarcomas in flat bones are thought to be more aggressive in their behavior, and little is known about intralesional treatment outcomes of low‐grade chondrosarcoma in these locations. We tried to find the differences between patients who had low‐grade chondrosarcoma in their flat bones versus those with long bone involvement with regard to (1) disease outcome, (2) functional outcome, and (3) treatment complications. Methods We retrospectively reviewed 44 patients with primary lo… Show more

“…Despite the continuous development of novel therapeutic approaches, findings still imply surgical treatment's clinical and practical importance in the long term (25). Complete wide surgical excision of the tumoral mass (including intralesional curettage and cryotherapy) (26) as much as possible is favored. Thus, the primary aim is to achieve clear surgical margins.…”

“…A group from Orlando (Florida, USA) retrospectively analyzed data from 44 patients with low-grade chondrosarcoma in flat bones treated in this way, to see if the outcomes differ from those treated for equivalent lesions in the long bones. 5 The outcomes of seven patients with flat bone lesions were compared with 37 patients with long bone lesions after intralesional curettage and cryotherapy. Five-year local recurrence-free survival was 80% in the flat bone group, and 97% in the long bone group.…”

“…To the Editor, We read the article "Can low-grade chondrosarcoma in flat bones be treated with intralesional curettage and cryotherapy?" by Park et al 1 with a lot of interest. We appreciate the authors' efforts in shedding light on a difficult topic wherein treatment guidelines are still not clearly defined.…”
