Can Natural Products be Used to Overcome the Limitations of Colorectal Cancer Immunotherapy?

Abstract: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common cancer of the digestive system that endangers human health. Immunotherapy is widely used in the treatment of patients with cancer. Some patients with dMMR/MSI-H CRC benefit from treatments that use immune checkpoint inhibitors, but most CRC patients are not sensitive to immunotherapy. Furthermore, internal resistance and immune escape lead to a reduced immunotherapy response. Therefore, the development of an effective combination therapy to improve the response rate to immun… Show more

“…In addition, combined treatment strategy of natural products with immunosuppressive agents has been shown to be more effective in halting lung cancer than monotherapy in trials of natural anticancer products for lung cancer tumor microenvironment ( 109 ). Colon cancer (CRC) clinic research has found that natural products may affect the NK cells, T cells and Tregs of CRC to perform immunomodulatory functions for anti-tumor ( 110 ). Natural products have been shown to restore immune-suppressed tumor microenvironments under a single target and organ-specific inflammatory strategy, recruiting subpopulations of immune cells to perform their functions in the microenvironment ( 111 ).…”

“…Tumor cells avoid immune surveillance by suppressing the body’s immune system in various ways, thus enabling tumor immune escape. To counteract this, combinations of immuno- and chemotherapies are being developed to strengthen immune system response to tumors and to minimize the negative effects of chemotherapy ( 4 , 5 ).…”

“…Other cells with a role in immune regulation are CD4+ effector T cells, tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), DCs, NKs, and mast cells ( 11 ). Several immunosuppressive factors, such as prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), interleukin-10 (IL-10), and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), are secreted by these cells to regulate the immunosuppressive network ( 5 ).…”

“…A herbal extract may have several organic chemicals ( Zhang et al, 2012 ), and the efficacy can result from the synergistic effects of constituents ( Ahmad et al, 2006 ). The paucity of clinical trials ( Rivera et al, 2013 ) and lack of dose standardization are the other limiting issues ( Dong et al, 2022 ). However, the use of herbal medicine is increasing worldwide, and its benefits cannot be ignored.…”
