Can two quantum Cheshire cats exchange grins?

Abstract: A common-sense perception of a physical system is that it is inseparable from its physical properties. The notion of Quantum Chesire Cat challenges this, as far as quantum systems are concerned. It shows that a quantum system can be decoupled from its physical property under suitable pre and postselections. However, in the Quantum Cheisre Cat setup, the decoupling is not permanent. The photon, for example, and its polarization is separated and then recombined. In this paper, we present a thought experiment whe… Show more

“…While the second-order quantum interference is employed in our experiment for the weak noninvasive system-pointer measurement interaction, the weak values in the experiment by Z.-H. Liu et al were only inferred from the linear relation between the post-selection probability and the perturbation strength. Instead, in their experiment, the secondorder quantum interference appeared for introducing two quantum Cheshire cats, demonstrating the exchange of grins between two cats 47,48 .…”

“…The weak interaction between the system and the meter can be effected by a joint unitary Ûσ R z that couples the z component of the photon polarization to the meter. A convenient unitary operator that can serve this purpose, also used in [40,41], is given by…”

“…In the context of quantum Cheshire cat, the possibility of isolating an object from its physical properties 7 has sparked the interest of theoretical physicists. Soon after, extensions and further discussions of more general scenarios were presented [8][9][10][11][12] . Also, the effect of quantum Cheshire cat has been found to have intrinsic links to other quantum paradoxes: for instance, the three-box paradox 13 .…”

“…In this article, we report an experiment with manifoldly entangled photons that demonstrates a stronger object-property separation, whereby an object can permanently drop a certain property and acquire a property that it did not have from another object 11 . The photons are taken as "Cheshire cats", and their polarisations as "grins".…”
