Can vitamin D status influence seroconversion to SARS-COV2 vaccines?

Abstract: Existing data indicate an association between vitamin D deficiency and increased severity of respiratory distress due to COVID-19 infection, especially in high-risk populations. To date, the effect of vitamin D on immunogenicity to SARS-CoV-2 vaccines has been investigated solely in young healthcare workers in a few studies, yielding conflicting findings, yet highlighting that the response to immunization is inversely related to age. Vitamin D status can potentially influence the antibody titers in people with… Show more

“…The Spike protein mutations in Delta and Omicron variants of SARS-CoV-2 have exhibited a heightened affinity for the ACE-2 receptor on human epithelial cells, enhancing their entry [42]. Individuals with low vitamin D levels (hypovitaminosis D) experience reduced neutralizing antibody titers from prior infection or vaccination [43]. Moreover, these individuals show lower responsiveness of neutralizing antibodies generated through vaccination, partly due to immune evasion [44,45], particularly pronounced against bivalent vaccines, as seen with BQ and XBB subvariants [46].…”

“…The Omicron series is characterized by highly mutable single-stranded RNA genomes, leading to increased transmissibility and evasion from detection by COVID-19 vaccines, including bivalent vaccines [47]. Countries with higher vaccination rates experienced a higher incidence of viral mutations, particularly among those vaccinated, but also weakened immune systems due to severe vitamin D deficiency [43]. This has posed a significant public health threat, hindering the elimination of SARS-CoV-2 worldwide.…”

“…Alternative vaccine schedules are not insignificant, and they frequently affect vaccine efficacy. Similarly, adjusting the schedules to account for the risk of severe COVID-19 outcomes, as well as individuals' ability to mount and sustain an immune response, is critical [81,82].…”
