Abstract: It has been found that Sir Sandford Fleming, a noted Canadian civil engineer, performed static penetration tests at the bottom of boreholes, using cased sounding rods, as early as 1872 during construction of a railway bridge near Newcastle, N.B.These tests were made well before any other similar ones which are known. Details of the tests are given.
