Cancer detection in excised breast tumors using terahertz imaging and spectroscopy

Abstract: Terahertz imaging and spectroscopy has demonstrated a potential for differentiating tissue types of excised breast cancer tumors. Pulsed terahertz technology provides a broadband frequency range from 0.1 THz to 4 THz for detecting cancerous tissue. Tumor tissue types of interest include cancer typically manifested as infiltrating ductal or lobular carcinomas, fibro-glandular (healthy connective tissues) and fat. In this work, images of breast tumors excised from human and animal models are reviewed. In additio… Show more

“…As a result, water is not the only factor contributing to the contrast between the two different tissue areas. Thus, the tumor boundaries in THz images can be recognized, and these are in accordance with the visible images, indicating that the THz imaging technique could be useful for TPI has been successfully applied to liver [164,173,174], colon [165,175,176], intestine [161], brain [39,156,177], skin [178], ovarian [167], oral [154] and breast cancers [132,163,179].…”

“…Concerning the optical characterization at the low frequency region, many spectroscopic works are present in the literature [161][162][163][164][165][166][167]. One significant work about the ability in distinguishing and classifying the THz response of different types of tissues is Ref.…”

“…THz radiation has been shown to be nonionizing and biologically safe at the power levels generally used to analyze fixed tissues 3 . As a result, THz imaging and spectroscopy has been used to classify and differentiate various tissue features such as water content to indicate burn damage and healing 4 , liver cirrhosis 5 , and cancer in excised tissues 6,7 . Cancer assessment in particular covers a broad range of potential clinical and surgical applications, and has been investigated for cancers of the brain 8 , liver 9 , ovaries 10 , gastrointestinal tract 11 , and breast 7,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19 .…”
