Cancer-Immune Equilibrium: Questions Unanswered

Abstract: Cancer-immune (CI) equilibrium constitutes an important component of the cancer immunoediting theory. It is defined as a period during which our immune system and cancer live in harmony in the body. The immune system, though not able to completely eliminate the cancer, doesn't allow it to progress or metastasize further. Mechanisms of this phase are poorly understood because this phase is difficult to identify even by the most modern detection methods. Till now, the work done on the equilibrium phase of cancer… Show more

“…In the "equilibrium phase" tumor growth is controlled by the immune system but tumor cells are not completely eradicated. In the "escape" phase the tumor progresses and metastasizes [4,6]. The delicate balance between tumor cell growth and elimination may be disturbed by immune manipulations enhancing naturally occurring immunosurveillance.…”

“…A better understanding of the intricate interplay between cancer and the immune system, and of mechanisms of immune evasion and of hijacking of the host response by cancer cells, is relevant to the development of effective immunotherapeutic approaches (3)(4)(5)(6).…”

“…As aforementioned the marked decrease in 16 of 24 plasma cytokines and chemokines at day 14 correlated with an increase in pro-tumor cell types Tc, NK and NK/T cells, potentially indicating a re-activation of the immune response at this time point. We tentatively speculate that this may be associated with tumor immune escape (33), as the histological and MRI tumor growth appeared to accelerate around this time point.…”
