“…This was also our experience in this series. In our study, the average duration of symptoms before presentation was 9 weeks and this agrees with the late presentation observed by other workers around the world with its attendant poor prognosis [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] .The use of baseline investigations like urinalysis and liver function test in this condition cannot be over-emphasized as these when combined with clinical evaluation and abdominal ultrasound scan were most useful in making a diagnosis of this condition in our environment where diagnostic facilities are quite limited and expensive. At the earlier part of this study, abdominal CT Scan could only be done several kilometers away from our city at great cost.…”

In Ghana, breast cancer is now the most common malignant disease in women and accounts for the majority of cancer related deaths [2] [3]. In 1996, 12.8% of all admissions for malignant neoplasms to the Korle Bu Teaching hospital were for breast cancer [4].…”

“…Cancer pain increases with progression of the disease and around a third of patients with cancer report pain: rising to three quarters in the advanced stages of cancer [2]. Currently, 12.5% of all deaths are caused by cancer, which is more than HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined [3,4]. Attempts to control pain and hence improve functional ability and quality of life have been over shadowed in the past by attempts to cure the underlying disease [2].…”
