Cancer-Related Alopecia: From Etiologies to Global Management

Abstract: Alopecia represents a multifaceted challenge with distinct etiologies and consequences. Transposed to the world of oncology, different types of alopecia and molecular pathways have been characterized, allowing a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms. In patients with cancer, alopecia can be iatrogenic (i.e., due to conventional chemotherapies, endocrine therapies, targeted therapies, immunotherapies, radiotherapy and surgery) or a direct consequence of the disease itself (e.g., malnutrition, scalp … Show more

“…When stratified by alopecia, patient-reported function, overall health, and overall QoL were generally stable; because patients had already progressed on other therapies and were at risk of fatal progression, perhaps alopecia was not as important to these patients. The impact of hair loss on QoL may depend on many factors, including the proportion of hair lost, the amount of hair the patient had prior to starting treatment, sex, social status, and employment status [42][43][44]. It is possible that alopecia is not permanent in these patients, but further analysis is necessary.…”
