Cancer Research in the Arab World

Abstract: Cancer research is needed in the Arab world to provide evidence to healthcare workers and health policy makers. This chapter examines the literature on cancer research productivity in the Arab world, and the output of the 22 countries with respect to the number of publications, main types of cancers studied and top journals that researchers aim to publish their findings in. Although the Arab region is lagging in its cancer research output, it is reassuring that productivity has been on the rise in the last dec… Show more

“…Armed conflicts and insurgencies have severely undermined the research capabilities of several MENA countries. Ranging from chronic underfinancing and poor infrastructure to deficient research culture ( 15 , 18 , 27 ), the challenges health researchers face in fragile and conflict-affected settings are numerous ( 11 , 28 ). Aiming to identify opportunities for improvement, our study aimed to map out published cancer research and highlight the characteristics of published research across 6 countries affected by conflict in the MENA region.…”

“…Despite the challenges mentioned above, the MENA region has been actively contributing to cancer research over the past two decades ( 15 18 ). However, and to the best of our knowledge, studies using bibliometric methods to analyze the knowledge output and trends of research on cancer in Fragile and Conflict-Affected Settings (FCS) in the MENA region are limited.…”

“…These countries are plagued with recurrent conflicts, and political and economic instability, which also translates into low investment and prioritization around research and development (5). Comparably, the total number of publications on GU cancer in the Arab region is considerably lower than in the US and Europe, which mirrors the broader trend in cancer research (9).…”

“…This is alarming, given that the cancer burden is increasing worldwide, particularly in the Arab region, despite the advancement in treatment and diagnosis (8). The contribution of Arab countries and institutions to cancer research is quite limited (9,10). For example, a geographically and temporally limited study highlighted that cancer research productivity in Arab countries is lower than in the United States (US), Europe, and Japan, mainly due to the limited number of researchers, and lack of funding, networking, and research support (11).…”

“…However, the lack of trust in research capabilities in developing countries and the exclusion of researchers from those countries from research networks is another significant barrier. The lack of support for publications from developing countries in reputable journals is also a primary challenge [ 23 ]. The global community should continue to support and create mentorship programs and initiatives to support new research programs in the UAE and other countries ( Figure 2 ).…”
