Cancer survivors in the workplace: sleep disturbance mediates the impact of cancer on healthcare expenditures and work absenteeism

Abstract: The worse outcomes observed among employees receiving treatment for breast and prostate cancer, the most common forms of cancer among women and men, were partially explained by the impacts of cancer and treatment for cancer on sleep disturbance. These findings suggest that preventing or addressing sleep disturbance may result in economic benefits in addition to improvements in health and quality of life.

“…Although prostate cancer presents numerous potential barriers to sleep (e.g., hot flashes, nocturia), current survivorship guidelines do not address sleep . In addition to its impact on QoL, sleep disturbances also mediate the impact of cancer status on missed days from work and healthcare expenditures .…”

“…In the execution, the following final results were found, where the result is the average of the 30 measurements and the standard deviation of the test is in brackets. The number of Gaussian membership functions (M) is defined by the cross-validation technique in the range of [3][4][5][6]. This range meets the criteria of interpretability proposed in the model so that linguistic characteristics are plausible for interpretation.…”

“…When the phenomenon occurs, a task, activity, or decision-making may not be performed, and as a result, the costs increase, or the overhead of work for other company employees may result in decreased quality or demotivation of people [2]. Recent research list characteristics that can cause absenteeism at work like Some sickness [3][4][5] as well as personal reasons [6], financial difficulties [7], lack of motivation [8], incoherent performance of managers [9] among other reasons [10,11]. Such factors combined can lead to many absences from an employee in their work period.…”

“…This is a missed opportunity, as evidence suggests that nutritional therapy (soy supplementation, for example) and combination of resistance training with aerobic exercise may improve cancer‐related fatigue and quality of life among patients with prostate cancer [3], although less is known about effective interventions that would improve sleep. Furthermore, disturbances in sleep have expensive implications for healthcare spending and workplace absenteeism, with the prostate cancer survivorship phase accounting for 50% of total cancer care‐related costs [4]. Studies that have investigated this relationship report that sleep disturbances significantly increase both the utilization of healthcare and workplace absenteeism, with the impact constituting 2% and 8%, respectively [4].…”

Studies that have investigated this relationship report that sleep disturbances significantly increase both the utilization of healthcare and workplace absenteeism, with the impact constituting 2% and 8%, respectively [4]. Given the exponential rise in overall healthcare spending in the USA, addressing costs stemming from preventable adverse events is urgent; the present study demonstrates that more creative interventions are wanting.…”
