Cancer Treatment Evolution from Traditional Methods to Stem Cells and Gene Therapy

Abstract: Background: Cancer, a malignant tumor, is caused by the failure of the mechanism that controls cell growth and proliferation. Late clinical symptoms often manifest as lumps, pain, ulcers, and bleeding. Systemic symptoms include weight loss, fatigue, and loss of appetite. It is a major disease that threatens human life and health. How to treat cancer is a long-standing problem that needs to be overcome in the history of medicine. Discussion: In the text, we systematically review the cancer treatment evolutio… Show more

“…Treating cancer has been a long‐standing concern in the field of medical science. Traditional cancer treatments have limitations that restrict their use, and their side effects can cause significant harm to both the physical and mental health of patients (He et al, 2021) (Table 3). Overcoming these challenges has led to the development of several new approaches for treating tumors, including nanotherapy, immunotherapy, and gene therapy, all aimed at improving patient survival (He et al, 2021).…”

“…Traditional cancer treatment methods (i.e. surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy) have been proven to indiscriminately destroy both normal and malignant cells, resulting in significant toxicities and side effects [1]. The sustained cell proliferation caused by uncontrolled cell division is one of the key pathological manifestations of cancer transformation.…”
