CancerLectinDB: a database of lectins relevant to cancer

Abstract: The role of lectins in mediating cancer metastasis, apoptosis as well as various other signaling events has been well established in the past few years. Data on various aspects of the role of lectins in cancer is being accumulated at a rapid pace. The data on lectins available in the literature is so diverse, that it becomes difficult and time-consuming, if not impossible to comprehend the advances in various areas and obtain the maximum benefit. Not only do the lectins vary significantly in their individual f… Show more

“…The infection of cells by HIV-1 requires the fusion of the viral membrane with cellular membranes. This fusion is mediated by viral envelope proteins such as gp120 and gp41 along with cell surface receptors (CD4 and chemokine receptor) on the target cells 429. Therefore, the viral envelope proteins are attractive targets for anti-HIV-1 therapy.…”

“…This database has retrieved cancer-related lectins and their corresponding sequence, structure, function information from literatures [16]. The application of the keyword “lectin” in searching the UniProt database (http://www.uniprot.org/) created the negative samples, which consisted of 820 proteins after eliminating sequences labeled with “similar”, “fragment”, “putative”, “probable”.…”

“…Development of integrated user-friendly online databases for glycan structures analysis, lectin binding parameters, lectin folds, and mass spectrometry reference data for fingerprinting are critically essential (Damodaran et al, 2008;Haslam et al, 2008;von der Lieth et al, 2006).…”
