Candidate Electrophysiological Endophenotypes of Hyper-Reactivity to Change in Autism

Abstract: Although resistance to change is a main feature of autism, the brain processes underlying this aspect of the disorder remain poorly understood. The aims of this study were to examine neural basis of auditory change-detection in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD; N = 27) through electrophysiological patterns (MMN, P3a) and to test whether these are quantitatively related to intolerance of change (using the BSE-R scale). ASD displayed significantly shorter MMN latency and larger P3a than controls, ind… Show more

“…Evidence for enhanced frequency discrimination ability of isolated pure tone stimuli has been found in children with ASD (Bonnel et al, 2003;Heaton, et al, 2008;O'Riordan and Passetti, 2006) and in adults with autism (although not in adults with Asperger's syndrome) in combined four-interval with two-forced choice (2IFC) frequency discrimination tasks (Bonnel et al, 2010). Furthermore, a similar pattern of ability has been observed also at neural levels in electrophysiological studies investigating neural response to changes of frequency in individuals with ASD, at the pre-attentive level (Ferri et al, 2003;Gomot et al, 2011;Gomot, Giard, Adrien, Barthelemy, and Bruneau, 2002;Kujala et al, 2010;Lepistö et al, 2008;.…”

“…Regarding the place of publication, most articles, totaling 6 (21,28,35,36,38,39) , were developed in Finland. Three articles were written in Brazil (4,12,19) , 3 in the Netherlands (20,23,25) , 3 in the United States (31,32,34) and 3 in France (26,29,30) . Studies have also been found in China (24,27) , Germany (33) , Canada (22) and Israel (37) .…”

“…The participants' ages ranged from 2 months (23) to 12 years of age (4,12,19,22,35,37) . Regarding the parameters used to perform the MMN, most of the research used the speech stimulus (4,(20)(21)(22)(23)(24)(25)(26)30,(32)(33)(34)(35)(36) and other studies opted to perform the MMN with tone burst stimulus (12,19,22,(27)(28)(29)31,(37)(38)(39) . Regarding the tone burst stimulus, it was verified that some studies evaluated with frequency variation (12,(27)(28)(29)31,(37)(38)(39) and 1, by duration and frequency (19) .…”

“…Отчасти это предположе-ние подтвердилось, но совсем в другом ключе, чем предполагалось изначально. Действительно, в тех исследованиях, где применялись речевые стимулы, было показано, что Р3а уменьшен при аутизме , а в тех, где использовали физические звуки -что Р3а не из-менен или увеличен (Gomot et al, 2011;. Однако свидетельствуют ли эти данные об избирательном дефиците ориентировки к новому речевому стимулу?…”
