“Candidatus Phytoplasma trifolii” related strain affecting Salix babylonica in Iran

Abstract: Over the last few years, in the northwest of Iran, symptoms of witches' broom have been observed in Babylon willow trees (Salix babylonica). Samples from symptomatic and symptomless trees were tested using nested PCR with universal primer pair P1/P7 followed by R16F2n/R2. Phylogenetic and virtual RFLP analysis showed that the phytoplasma associated with willow proliferation is related to the16SrVI-A subgroup.

“…For example, Tagetes patula , Gomphocarpus physocarpus , Tanacetum partenium , Rudbeckia hirta , Cereopsis lanceolate , Gaillardia, and China aster have been identified to be the hosts of the16SrI phytoplasma group [ 175 ]. Five host plant species were identified to be associated with 16SrVI, including Juniperus procumbens , Salix babylonica , Salix alba , Cota tinctoria , and Celosia argenta [ 176 , 177 , 178 ]. Other host plants, like Chrysanthemum morifolium , Robinia pseudoacacia , and Salix alba , are associated with 16SrIX [ 179 ].…”
