Abstract:Placenta is a pregnancy-specific organ responsible for maintenance of gestation and offspring survival in utero. Similar to other immune-privileged sites, fetoplacental unit was considered sterile. However, there is now strong evidence in humans that placenta harbors a unique microbiome.
